Do I qualify for Medicare?

In order to qualify for Original Medicare in 2023, you must be an American Citizen or a legal resident for minimum of 5 years and one of the following:

  • age 65 or older
  • Under age 65 and receiving Social Security Disability Income for 24 months
  • Diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

To enroll in Original Medicare, you may be required to reach out to your local Social Security office in some circumstances.

What is covered under Original Medicare?

PART A: HOSPITAL INSURANCE

Coverage for hospital expenses that are critical to inpatient care, such as a semi-private room, meals, nursing services, medications that are part of inpatient treatment. Those who are 65 and are already receiving Social Security retirement benefits, enrollment in Medicare Part A is usually automatic.

PART B: MEDICAL INSURANCE This can include outpatient care, preventive services, ambulance services, and durable medical equipment. It also covers part-time or intermittent home health and rehabilitative services, such as physical therapy, if they are ordered by a doctor. Those who are eligible for Part A are eligible for Part B by paying a monthly premium. You will also be responsible for a 20% coinsurance for many covered services.

Why would I need additional coverage?

Medicare Part A and Part B doesn’t cover certain benefits:

  • NO routine vision
  • NO routine dental
  • NO outpatient prescription drugs
  • NO overseas emergency health coverage.

If all you have is Original Medicare, you’ll need to pay for these costs out-of-pocket.This is where a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage can help cover any gaps

How does Medicare Supplement differ from Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans are not the same thing. Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans may both help limit out-of-pocket spending, however they work very differently. Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap plans, work as a secondary to Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B). The plan will only pay after Original Medicare has paid their portion. These plans have no networks and do not require referrals to see specialists, as long as the Provider accepts Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) replaces Original Medicare and must include the same minimum coverage as Part A and Part B. Most Medicare Advantage Plans also include Part D prescription drug benefits. They often require you to follow a strict network of doctors and may have higher out of pocket costs. However, they often provide additional benefits.

These additional benefits provided by Medicare Advantage plans often include dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drug coverage, and some plans may include transportation assistance or gym memberships. However, not every plan or every carrier may offer these additional benefits.
